Ivor Hodgson
PBP Co-Founder, Pitching, Hitting, Fielding PitchingBiography
Ivor Hodgson grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland and currently resides in Frederick, Maryland. He is a first generation American. His parents and brother are immigrants from Nicaragua, and he has learned his work ethic and courage through them. Ivor played his high school ball at the accomplished St. John’s College High School in DC, earning 1st team All Met Honors, Gatorade Player of the Year in DC, Louisville Slugger Player of the Year in DC his senior year in 2005 as a two-way player (outfielder and pitcher). He furthered his education at Mount St. Mary’s University where he played two years at the institution. In 2007, Ivor was drafted as a pitcher by the Kansas City Royals in the 17th round. He played five years for the Kansas City Royals organization, achieving Player of the Month recognition as well as being a Top 60 Prospect within the organization. In 2010, Ivor reached as high as Advanced A baseball with the Wilmington Blue Rocks of the Carolina League. His career was cut short due to medical reasons.
Ivor wants every player to know that he is invested in them. He wants to develop a strong, lasting relationship with his players that is rooted in honesty, relatability, and understanding. He communicates with positive and honest feedback, which comes from an empathetic place and is presented in a way to further motivate the athletes he works with. Ivor coaches with tons of energy to encourage an interaction with his players that helps develop a connection.
After suffering from his arm injuries, Ivor prioritizes the arm health and arm care of each of his players. His rule of thumb is if you aren’t healthy to play, then you can’t compete. He uses baseball to not only develop young athletes to reach their full potential, but to also teach life lessons involving good character, humility, and confidence.
His mission and vision of training stems from empowering his players to want to do well for themselves, take ownership of their craft, and be the best person they can be on and off the field. Once athletes are empowered, they then operate out of integrity because of the sense of pride in themselves and their craft. Ivor adopted this mindset at an early age. Once integrity has been set, meticulous practice will then be the driving force to make sure the individual is striving to be THEIR best! Falling in love with the detail and mastering the fundamentals are key in baseball; Ivor became obsessed with these at a very young age, which was vital to his success.
For the Parents: Ivor will always show respect to your child while respecting his/her individuality, knowing that there is no cookie-cutter way to play this game of baseball. Ivor has a special ability to communicate with all levels of athletes. He will push your child to his/her limits mentally as well as physically because Ivor wants to see how the athlete deals with areas of growth. Through those challenges, your child will learn more about him/herself and capabilities rather than always being successful. Ivor has been coaching and providing lessons for over eight years now, working with various levels, ranging from 9U travel baseball to the Division I
Collegiate level.
For the player: Don’t worry about how big or small you are! Focus on your fundamentals and don’t rush your development. People develop and mature at different times in their lives; those physical features will change, but the fundamental movements and concepts of the game won’t! Therefore focus on the small things in your game and become exceptional in those areas. An example to support this outlook is during Ivor’s sophomore year of high school, he was 5’6, and by the end of his senior year, he was 6’0. He didn’t stop growing until his sophomore year of college, ending up at 6’1. Ivor didn’t stress about his height and the circumstances he couldn’t control; he knew his skillset was solid. He focused on his fundamentals and become an expert in the field. And the rest was history.
Throughout Ivor’s baseball career, he played on teams where he was the best player on the team, but he has also played on teams where he was the worst player. Experiencing those moments taught Ivor the important lesson of humility: you shouldn’t look down anyone who you believe doesn’t have your skill set, and you shouldn’t think you are better than anyone because you do have a better skill set. Ivor instills a work ethic that is derived from an urgency to be the best player/person you can be – to outwork everyone in the room, never let someone question your work ethic, and to never give up or back down from a challenge.
